Consett, County Durham is the birthplace of Atkinson. Eric Atkinson and Ella May were his parents. Atkinson was raised up in Anglican. He was educated at Durham Choristers School. Then he secured a place at Newcastle University, where he received a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Sunetra Sastry is the wife of Rowan Atkinson. They married in February 1990. Ben and Lily are their two children. The couple first met in the late 1980s. They divorced on 10 November 2015. Atkinson later married to Louise Ford in 2014. Atkinson's third child was born in December 2017.
