History

Basketball started to be played in the 20th century. Firstly it was played at a short level. Later it started to be played professionally. Teams abounded throughout the 1920s. There were hundreds of men's professional basketball teams in towns and cities all over the United States, and little organization of the professional game. In 1946, the Basketball Association of America (BAA) was formed.

The first game was played in Toronto, Ontario, Canada between the Toronto Huskies and New York Knickerbockers on November 1, 1946. In 2001, the NBA formed a developmental league, the National Basketball Development League FIBA (International Basketball Federation) was formed in 1932. In 1989, FIBA allowed professional NBA players to participate in the Olympics for the first time. Worldwide, basketball tournaments are held for boys and girls of all age levels. The global popularity of the sport is reflected in the nationalities represented in the NBA. The Women's National Basketball League began in 1981.

Rules

Following are the rules which must be followed while playing basketball:

  1. Two involved teams consists of maximum12 players each.
  2. The objective of the game is to put the ball in the opposing team’s basket.
  3. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
  4. The game consists of four periods of 10 minutes.
  5. The ball may either be passed from one player to another, or dribbled by a player from one point to another (bounced while walking or running).
  6. When a team gains possession of the ball, they have a maximum of 24 seconds to attempt a shot.
  7. A personal foul occurs when there is illegal contact between two opponents.
  8. Once a team has made four fouls in a period, each additional foul (on a player not attempting a shot) will result in the automatic awarding of two free-throws.
