Volleyball

Volleyball is a popular team sport.In this sport two teams of six players each are separated by a net.The purpose of each team is to score points.

History

A physical education director William G. Morgan created a new game called Mintonette in 1895.Alfred Halstead;an observer, noticed the volleying nature of the game at its first exhibition match in 1896.He then gave it the name of volleyball.There is dispute in its official status. Some sources say Spalding created the first official ball in 1896, while others claim it was created in 1900.Canada was the first country outside the United States which adopt volleyball in 1900.

The first World Championships were held in 1949 for men and 1952 for women.The sport is now popular in major parts of the world. It was added to the Olympic program at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Volleyball is also a sport at the Paralympics managed by the World Organization Volleyball for Disabled.

Rules

Follwing are the rules which must be followed while playing volleyball:
• It must consists of 6 players on the floor at any one time.
• Maximum of 3 hits per side are necessary.
• The ball can contact with any part of a player’s body.
• A player cannot block or attack a serve from on or inside the 10-foot line.
• Player may not hit the ball twice in succession.
• Ball may be played off the net.
• Catching,holding or throwing of the ball is illegal.
• After the serve, front-line players may switch positions at the net.
