Definition of Syntax

To exchange information or ideas with his audience an author uses words. The writer arranges these words to express the meanings of them. These arranged words referred to as syntax.

A Gardner first chooses his seeds, then he decides when, where and how to sow them. A teacher initially creates his notes, then he plans what to and when to teach his students. Similarly, a writer first gathers his words, and then must aim when, where and how he wants to use them in order to impress his readers. This plan-making process and its actual application, is syntax.

A syntax is also involves in grammatical practices of languager. Other considerations include:

  • Sentence structure
  • Punctuation usage
  • Creative elements like similes and metaphors.

Why Is Syntax Important?

Behind every writing there is a reason or a purpose. This purpose can be determined by the structure of a syntax.While writing a cover letter for job the professional attitude of writing must be observed.So,it should be grammatically strong and clearly stated. Avoid to use bullet points, pieces,or over writing, stylistics. However, in case of poem poem, you are free to write according to your choice.

Examples of Syntax

Let's take a look at a few examples. Here is an excerpt from a sample cover letter: “I’m writing to apply for the position of Social Media Manager for Fit Living, as advertised on your website careers page. I have three years of experience as a Social Media Assistant for Young Living, and I believe I am ready to move up to the manager position.”

The syntax is free from metaphors and totally smooth.The writer has written it in simple sentences.

Let’s read the syntax of Dr. Seuss's book “The Cat in the Hat”:

“now! now! have no fear. have no fear!' said the cat. 'my tricks are not bad,' said the cat in the hat. 'why,”

He used exclamation marks and the sentences are brief.and make use of exclamation points. He used such syntax to make his pupil capable of learning.
