Politicians, and sometimes other people, may get together to form a government. The study of politics in universities is called political science political studies public administration. In everyday life the term politics refers to the way that countries are governed and to the ways that governments make rules and laws. Politics can also be seen in other group such as in companies clubs schools and churches.

In most countries, people have formed political parties to put forward their ideas. There is usually some disagreement between people within a party, but they work together because they feel that they agree on enough things, and they will have more power if they join together. They agree to take the same position on many issues, and agree to support the same changes to law and the same leaders. An election is usually a competition between different parties. Some examples of parties are the Liberal party the Labor party and the Greens.

There are also disagreements between different countries. Attempts to solve the problem with meetings are called diplomacy. This is politics between nations instead of politics within nations. If the problems are not resolved by diplomatic meetings they can lead to war or terrorism.Politics. It is possibly the most hated word in the English language. Most people hate politics and government without really knowing what they are. Many different definitions of politics exist. One definition defines politics as the conflict between groups over something they both want. Another similar definition calls politics the who gets what when and how. The third and final type of monarchy is an absolute monarchy. In an absolute monarchy, the monarchy has supreme and absolute authority to do what it wishes. An example of this occurs in the country of Saudi Arabia. In Saudi Arabia, the royal family can enforce any law it wishes- no matter how bad it could be for the country. Absolute monarchies are often very oppressive to its people. For example Saudi Arabia has very strict laws that have been put in place by the royal family. The people living in the country have no voice in an absolute monarchy. The second type of government is a republic. A republic is any government that does not have a monarch. Republics are also divided into three classes. A republic can be classified as a dictatorship, an oligarchy or a democracy. A dictatorship is a government ruled by one commander. An example of this is Iraq. Saddam Hussein is the dictator of Iraq. Whatever he decides becomes law. Dictatorships are similar to absolute monarchies in that they are very oppressive to the people of the country.

To begin this assessment we ask the question, how why and how does politics play a role in government. Initially the answer is obvious politics is the process by which governments operate. However for this essay the definition of politics has a more distinctive and idiosyncratic meaning. What we find with politics is that it is found in all organizations, both public and private. Organizational politics refers to how people develop power and social networks in attempts to influence others in the group. People use strategies like coalitions alliances bargains or deal making to engage others to influence decision-making and outcomes.

On hearing the word politics what usually springs to mind are images of government politicians and their policies or more negatively the idea of corruption and dirty tricks. The actual definition seems to have been obscured and almost lost by such representations and clichés that tend not to pinpoint the true essence which defines this thing called politics. In order to make an attempt at a definition of politics a systematic approach is required. To begin with a brief historical overview will be considered, to understand the origins of politics. Following this different core concepts which are imperative to a definition of politics will be discussed in the hope to discover a true and fair interpretation of the word politics.

The word politics comes from the Greek word polis meaning the state or community as a whole. The concept of the polis was an ideal state and came from the writings of great political thinkers such as Plato and Aristotle. In his novel The Republic Plato describes the ideal state and the means to achieve it. Hence the word politics originally has connotations in the ways in which to create the ideal society.

An ideal society is in practice a rather difficult aim and even an impossible aim to achieve. Politics implies measures which could and should in the views of their devisor be implemented in the hope to create a better society than that which is already present. The very fact that Plato and Aristotle saw imperfections in the societies in which they lived prompted them to write their political philosophies. These philosophies provided the first written recognition of politics.
