Hostel is a building that provides cheap accommodation and meals to students, workers or travellers. In our country, hostels are found commonly for students.
Students usually experience hostel life when they remain away from home for a specific study period. It is no doubt a novel experience for them. First time in their life they feel free like air, without any parental observation. But, at the same time, it is a period of trial for their behavior.
Hostel life, no doubt, has innumerable joys and entertainments. At the same time it brings stress and strains of study with it as well.
Hostel life develops a person as an individual. He learns to behave on the principle of equality. He learns to live within means as he gets a fixed amount of money to meet his regular expenses. In the hostel, he has to be very particular about his budget. This habit helps him a great deal in later life to manage his economic life. In the hostel, he gets proper privacy to study uninterruptedly. No relative visits him unnecessarily.
He has no household responsibility of doing chores. He learns time management and spends his life according to a scheduled timetable. He can share his educational problems with his class fellows easily and they may find a solution with mutual efforts. In hostel life, he communicates with so many people and thus gains a worldly wisdom. He observes students from different backgrounds and by this way gets knowledge of human nature. A student’s life becomes disciplined in the environment of a hostel. He learns to cooperate with others. He gains valuable experience indulging in games, debates besides academic activities. Learning, playing, working and eating together is a real fun for everyone in a hostel. Hostel life develops the personality and approach of the students.
