What is happiness?

Happiness is a state of mind and a way of thinking. Thoughts vary from person to person. Everyone has his own likes and dislikes. Everyone has his own environment and way of living. Everyone has his personal set of beliefs. So the philosophy of happiness differs from person to person.

World Happiness Data

World Database of Happiness consists of three things: satisfaction with life, life expectancy, and happy life years. According to this measurement, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland are the countries where people are happiest in the world while the people living in Afghanistan, Angola, Ethiopia, Kenya, Niger, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe are the least happy.

Factors of happiness

This study helps to deduce some conclusions. Top ranking nations are those who have high income, more access to education, health, recreation, amenities, safety and liberty. All these things, in fact, create an atmosphere of happiness. And the countries where people are deprived of these basic amenities are touching the lowest point of the happiness graph. These are the facts which cannot be denied.

Way of thinking

Besides these ground realities, the way of thinking grossly affects and determines the moments of life as happy or unhappy. For that reason Sweden, one of the happiest countries of the world, has also highest suicide rate in the world. It means despite all economic stability, happiness is hardly achieved if the people do not have healthy, balanced and contented way of thinking and adaptability to their environment.

How Happiness can be achieved?

In his famous book “Conquest of Happiness,” Bertrand Russell advises that one should explore one's interests and adopt a profession according to one’s passion. This is necessary to spend time happily. Besides, there must be one or two hobbies for leisure. Then conjugal compatibility is the main factor conducive to happiness in life. A contented attitude helps a great deal to promote a happy life.

Comparison often leads to an unhappy ending. So I always try to avoid’ comparing the situations and remain contented with my own condition with a fair struggle and aspiration of progress. I never harbor jealousy and other negative emotions for others. I enjoy every small thing and take a keen interest in people and places. This particular attitude of mine ensures my happiness in the ups and downs of life. I remain busy in my joys and interests than the unfounded sorrows and baseless fears of the future. And above all, I remain optimistic and hopeful and think positively about everything and every person. In my view, this is the golden key to happiness.
