What is Superstition?
Superstition means the belief that particular events happen in a way that cannot be explained by reason or science.
Correlation between Literacy and Superstition
We are a backward nation. Since the creation of Pakistan, the literacy rate is low in the country. Illiterate people do not recognize cause and effect relationships. They are not able to see a genuine scientific reason behind every happening. They inherited superstitions and fear of unknown powers. They have been consulting so-called spiritual pundits to tackle the misfortunes which they think are the result of magic, ghosts, or supernatural elements.
Besides some unusual mishaps, even common ailments are attributed to invisible forces as spirits and devils by the ignorant populace.
Role of Spiritual healers
Millions of people think that their poverty, failure, and backwardness are the result of someone’s ill will by amulets, voodoos, and black magic. In fact, they are guided so by their spiritual healers. They, quite often, visit shrines and hermits to seek the remedy of their grievances. Thus, instead of addressing the problems rationally, they are misguided and further ruined by impostors.
They are confused to such a level that a minor stir in the window disturbs them. They are afraid of black cats, broken mirrors, and many other insignificant omens. The elder women in villages and small towns often get amulets for children. The wives get amulets to control their husbands. The rustic people use such methods to exert an influence over others in their favor.
So-called Pirs
Sometimes so-called “Pirs” beat the victim to death to make him/her docile in favor of the complainant. These “Pirs” often claim to have control over ghosts to make them do anything they like. These notions attract the naive populace and they are trapped by their tricks.
